Butterfly Rain

by Vernie Lynn DeMille

You are the flickering sunlight on a butterfly wing,

The flash and fade of light that provides the magic of weightlessness

In summer air.

I want to catch you,

Hold you close,

Admire the wonder that you are,

But to catch you

Is to crush you.

And so my heart bursts

When I watch you fly.

Your colors weave

In flight patterns

Through the flowers,

Herbs, and forage

That grow in fields

Made plentiful by your

Nurturing touch.

Life flourishes,

The earth expands,

And heaven reaches down,

In rain and dew,

In response to your wings.

And I find myself grateful for storms,

That settle your fluttering,

Momentarily,

And allow me to sit beside you

In the stillness of rain.
